A striking William IV hallmarked silver vinaigrette by Edward Smith.  This silver vinaigrette is of typical form with an engine turned decoration and applied border. It has a rectangular central unengraved cartouche.   The decoration is really crisp and still sharp with minimal wear.  The base and sides are engraved with the same design.  The grille is decorative and unusual in that it has a cross through the centre which comes diagonally from the corners.  The hallmarks inside the lid and base are legible despite being rubbed.  By a well established and one of the most renowned silversmiths of the period this is a really quality example of a vinaigrette to add to a collection or start a new one.  The grille is also marked with the lion passant again this shows the quality of this item.

Assay Office:  Birmingham

Maker: Edward Smith

Date: 1835

Condition -

Excellent - this vinaigrette is free from damage.   The engraved decoration is sharp and unrubbed. The hallmarks are legible but rubbed.  Minimal signs of wear commensurate with age and minimal use. There is a very slight gap when the grille is shut but this is minimal but otherwise is fine.  All hinges are good with no repairs.  The grille is marked with the lion passant showing the quality of this item.  The vinaigrette itself closes well without any gap.
