This is a large shaped and decorative Victorian silver vinaigrette with a lovely striking tartan Pattern to the top and base. The top also has a shaped unengraved central cartouche. The shape and decoration of this vinaigrette show that it is a high quality item. The concave sides and thumbpiece are also decorated in keeping with the period. The lid opens to reveal an intricately decorated grille and a gilded interior. The grille consists of a single small flower with an elaborate design of stems and leaves. A lovely example of a larger size silver vinaigrette.
Assay Office: Birmingham
Maker: Alfred Taylor
Date: 1853
Condition -
Excellent with absolutely no damage or repairs to the exterior. The decoration is still clean and crisp and is not rubbed at all. The hinges are all good and in working order and the box itself fits snugly and opens and closes well. The inner gilding is complete and in good condition. The hallmarks are good but with some loss of definition. There are minor marks commensurate with age and minimal use. The grille has a slight compression on the opposite end to the hinge through being pressed closed over time - this is only really noticeable from certain angles and on close inspection and barely detracts from the overall effect and quality of the piece.
