This is a decorative Victorian silver vinaigrette with an engine turned decorative top.  The top decoration centres around a cartouche which is unengraved.  The back also bears the same engraved decoration.  The sides and ends have an engraved pattern to each as well which is a nice touch as the sides of these Vinaigrettes are usually plain or a continuation of the top pattern.  The inside opens to reveal a highly decorative grille and a gilded interior.  A lovely example of a Victorian silver vinaigrette by a highly regarded Silversmith.

Assay Office:  Birmingham

Maker: Colen Hewer Cheshire

Date: 1878

Condition -

Very Good with no dents, dinks, splits, damage or repairs.  There are very minor marks due to age and use but these are commensurate with age and light use.  The decoration is still clean and crisp and is not rubbed.  The hinges are all good and in working order and the box itself opens and closes well.  The inner gilding is complete with just very minor marks but no rubbing or missing sections.  The hallmarks are good with a small amount of rubbing but are clear and legible.

Dimensions -
